Massage the Antidote to Stress

Therapy Business Hints and tips for your Massage Career

Yale University researchers have found that chronic stress plays havoc on the brain by blocking out an important gene that protects the brain from depression.

Neuritin — “an activity-dependent gene that regulates neuronal plasticity” that is important for normal brain function, not just protection against depression — is decreased by chronic stress,Ronald Duman, a neurobiologist at Yale University and his team report in the study. “Neuritin produces antidepressant actions and blocks the neuronal and behavioural deficits caused by chronic stress,” they say in the June edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Depression affects roughly 121 million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

Massage could help people with depression by relieving their stress levels and reversing the negative effects of stress. Could be

Massage the Antidote to Stress and a potential replacement for alcohol

Massage the Antidote to Stress and a potential replacement for alcohol

A survey of more than 2,000 people aged between 35 and 45 years in the UK also found that a fifth of men and nearly one in six women admit they drink daily or most days of the week just to relax after a stressful day at work.

It found that four out of 10 women and a third of men said they were drinking more than the Government’s daily unit guidelines, which are set at 3-4 units for men and 2-3 units for women.

Almost half of the people questioned (44 per cent) said they were more likely to drink after a stressful day and more than a third (37 per cent) said they thought about having a drink on the way home.

The majority of those questioned (60 per cent) blamed work for their stress levels while half blamed financial worries and more than a third (36 per cent) said family life caused stress, the researchers found.

“Alcohol can be a ‘false friend’ when you are trying to deal with stress, said Siobhan McCann, head of campaigns and communications at Drinkaware which commissioned the survey.

“Even though it might seem like a few drinks can relieve the pressures of the day, in the medium to long term it can actually add to them whether they’re work, financial or family related,”
McCann was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

He said: “Stress can also be an excuse for people to drink more than they should, especially if they don’t realise the negative impact it can have on their health and wellbeing”.

As we know that massage is one of the best ways to relax, perhaps we should be targeting those who drink to relax and suggest a massage as a healthier and more positive alternative.

Send some emails/flyers out with one offer to half of the people who have shown interest and send a different offer to the other half. Give each offer a code that they have to quote to get the discount or freebie and see which one gets the best response.

Once you business gets to a certain size, we recommend that you buy in some software that can automatically do this for you.

What you need is a database that is linked to an auto-responder emailing system that has the ability to provide you with reports on how many emails were opened, how many people went to look at the links you had included to your website…. The list goes on. You can also send out the same email with a different title to see which heading is most appealing.

A database that is linked to your website so when someone makes a enquiry or a purchase, it autopopulates the database and generates an invoice saves a huge amount of time. It is known as a CRM. Customer Relationship Manager.

We have one and the time savings are huge. We recommend http://www.besthost.co.uk/

Essentials for Health Massage Therapy- the antidote to stress

Essentials for Health MD, Gill Tree has found the following research, adding to her argument that massage is the antidote to stress.

Sleep deprivation and physical stress have similar effects on the immune system , researchers from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom reported in the journal SLEEP. Both physical stress and severe sleep loss jolt the immune system into action, the authors explained.

The scientists , from Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam, and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, compared the number of white blood cells in 15 healthy young adult males who were subjected to normal sleep and severe sleep loss.

The greatest impact was on granulocytes - types of white blood cells – which lost their day-to-night time rhythmicity as numbers shot up, especially during nighttime.

As massage can really help enhance peoples length and depth of sleep, perhaps people with sleep deprivation could be your niche market?

If you are not sure exactly how to structure you therapy offering go out and trial it. When ever we are creating some thing new at Essentials for Health we will get a group of potential customers together, buy them dinner and brainstorm. Once we have more of an idea of what is required we will then trial it.

Your future customers will also provide you with all the answers you need to know about how to structure your treatments so when someone calls up to ask you about your therapy service say

“I’m looking to update how I offer my treatments. Can I pick your brains for a minute?”

It is fine to be a work in progress! You won’t have all the answers, but keep asking the questions and they will come!

My job at Essentials for Health is spent often not knowing, but time spent speaking to the people who will know or who can give me clarity or insight gives me the ah ha moments. (Remember last months tip about going to the experts sooner).
