Massage for Emotional Release

It is impossible to touch someone physically with out touching them emotionally. If you think about how we tense up against the forces of a harsh wind, then we can begin to see that we may also have a physical response to harsh words and difficult situations in our lives.

Research has shown that in fact we have a cellular memory, that we hold memories of experiences within our tissues.

It is common therefore when we touch someone, in a safe and nurturing way, that we are also giving them a safe haven in which to release emotion.

If someone cries when receiving a massage then reassure them, perhaps discontinue the massage for a while, but stay in contact with them, offer them tissues and a sympathetic listening ear, and allow the emotional release to happen.

Only continue the massage when they are ready and indicate this is so.

Massage is extremely beneficial and supporting during times of emotional upset, grief and bereavement. It helps the person feel cared for and nurtured, and they may also experience an opening up and a greater desire to talk about their grief and express their feelings.

Essential oils that assist an emotional release and grief are lavender, neroli, bergamot, basil, rosemary, rose, and geranium. Put a few drops on a tissue for the person to inhale as they receive the massage.

In times of grief we need to be treated gently and this is equally true when giving massage.
